PETALING JAYA: Tabung Harapan Malaysia (THM) has collected over RM18.6mil just two days after it was launched on Wednesday (May 30).
The Finance Ministry announced on Twitter that it had collected RM18,608,926.36 as of 3pm on Friday (June 1).
On Thursday (May 31), Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng revealed that Malaysians had donated RM7mil within 24 hours of the trust fund's launch.
He said that it's one way for Malaysians to show they are sehati, sejiwa, seraga (one heart, one spirit, one body) with the country.
The THM fund was set up after numerous Malaysians expressed a desire to donate to help the country alleviate its national debt, which Guan Eng had earlier said was now more than RM1 trillion.
All monies donated are tax deductible and Malaysians are advised to keep their receipts.
The public are asked to be careful of imitation posters, which look like the official THM poster, but with a fake account number.
The official account number for the trust fund is 5660 1062 6452.
Some private citizens had started pledges and one lady, Shazarina Bakti, even set up a crowdfunding drive.
The Malaysian Retail Chain Association (MRCA), through its Charity Foundation, will donate RM200,000 to THM.
Meanwhile, Malindo Air will contribute RM1 from each sale of flights within Malaysia towards the fund.
In a press statement, Lim said he was “humbled” by the magnanimity of Malaysians who have been channelling money non-stop to THM.
“Truly, Malaysians have taken their patriotism to a greater height, willing to part with their spare cash to help rebuild this nation we all love."
